Landscape Lab (2021)

	If there is no nature we haven’t touched, how can we negotiate our role in greater ecosystems? To what level should humans intervene? These questions prompted the creation of Landscape Lab, a film that holds a mirror to the complexities of nature parks and conservation in The Netherlands. Picturesque landscapes can easily flatten and erase more complex histories — how humans and nonhumans engaged the land before it was delegated to recreational use, how the animals came to live in the parks, or even how certain species were artificially bred. 
Landscape Lab is inspired by the failed modernist idea that nature can be fully created, shaped, and maintained. In the film, an ‘Expert’ character explains the history of three landscapes and how humans might prepare for the unpredictability of nature. The Lab represents a fictional future where landscapes can be modeled to fit any combination of human desires. It is closely linked to the Netherland’s development of New Nature, and the way that humans yearn for wilderness even when the ground beneath them is manmade. The fictional scenarios all begin with real Dutch landscapes and plausible problems. As the management of nonhumans grows increasingly absurd, the fight to regain control begins to parallel real-life conservation techniques. The&#38;nbsp;maakbaarheid, or ‘makeability,’ of nature is pushed to new extremes.

There is no clear distinction between right and wrong in managing nature — but we often lean on the narratives that favor the inevitability and justification of human intervention. Nature parks are a commons in their hybridity: dwellings for animals and recreation spaces for humans. As commoning does not shy away from entanglement, I critique our broken relationship with nature through humor and absurdity.

A collaborative project made during MAD Summerschool in Sigulda, Latvia.
The 2017 Summerschool focused on Biomimicry as a place of departure. Working closely with local craftspeople, each group was responsibile for rethinking a different phase of a meal: foraging, harvesting, cooking, and eating.
My group created a dining table for new rituals of communal meals.&#38;nbsp;

	We all need food to survive. But the art of eating has been diluted,
 and we have replaced cooking and eating in community with snacks on the go. Many of us are so disconnected from the ritual of sharing a meal that a long dinner is reserved for special occasions. Our group recognizes the need for reconnection: between people &#38;amp; people, people &#38;amp; nature, and people &#38;amp; food. Through our objects, we reconsider traditional utensils and offer a set of tools that allow you to slow down and savor every bite shared in company.

We decided to offer a solution that is not so far removed from the ceremony of sharing a meal. Perhaps these objects are the reason for gathering, like a watering hole where animals come back together after a long migration. We were inspired by the communal meals shared at the summerschool, as well as cultures that feed one another as a sign of respect. We studied natural organisms that communicate through close proximity: mushroom spores, lichen, coral reefs, and microscopic cells. The forms are familiar but not immediate — they require interaction and play. 

To begin the meal, at least two people will lift the surface onto the metal frames. These frames can be propped upright for sitting in chairs or horizontally for sitting on the ground. Thus, the ritual begins as a team effort. Bowls of food are brought to the table and nested in their spaces, but there is room for rearranging throughout the meal. The bowls are rounded to activate the motion of sharing as they pass from laps to hands. Because the objects rely on curiosity and intuition, guests might instinctively reach into bowls with their hands or feed the person sitting next to them. This ceremony of tasting and touching will rekindle families: both those we come from and those we make.

	MAD PHILOSOPHY&#38;nbsp;
To understand design and craftsmanship to the bone, we must take action—do work, create things, experiment with space and materials. Design theory must be tested in real life. Only creative work can produce new values.

MAD brings together designers, artists, craftsmen and scientists–people who are unlikely to meet under different circumstances. Theories and hypotheses are tested in practice by creating new things and experiences. MAD embraces soft definitions of design and art, by creating useful and aesthetic objects during irresistible authentic work by treating materials, where rules and discipline of crafts evoke a challenge and creativity.
The name MAD for the International Design Summer School is derived from the keywords describing the concept of the school—Man and Design.

	Accent Intelligence (2020)Accent Intelligence is a collection of audio recordings in which I explored the impact of machine learning on the everyday use of voice recognition technology. In six chapters, I take a closer look at governmental and industry related implementations and reveals the sources of inherit bias of voice recognition. I explain the business models inherent to voice-controlled home automation devices such as Apple’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Home. Ultimately, I want to advocate for a culture of dynamic ‘accent chameleons’ that represent a fuller and more accurate soundscape of human voice. Who Speaks? is part of a series of initiatives organised by the Queer Computing Consortium (QCC), co-founded by Ramon Amaro, Sheena Calvert, Niels Schrader, in collaboration with the Non Linear Narrative Master’s programme of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, UCL History of Art Department and Camberwell College of Arts. 	The narration includes research, personal reflection, and an interview. Each chapter is represented by a color field that fills the screen when that particular chapter is playing.
The visuals are mainly sourced from US Patents dealing with machine learning and text-to-speech technology. The patents begin to describe the process of how machines listen to human voices, but much is left obscure. 
I created a set of patent gifs for each chapter, and the code randomly selects which gif to play at any moment, creating a collaboration between myself and the machine. 	Virginia Living Magazine - Selected Work (2018-19)
Virginia Living Magazine is a bimonthly regional lifestyle magazine under Cape Fear Publishing with a focus on all things Virginia. Founded in 2002, it is the only statewide lifestyle magazine in the Commonwealth. As Assistant Art Director of a 2-person creative team (under the direction of Ann Harvey), I directed photoshoots, hired collaborators, planned various events, and designed the layout of half of each issue.
Ann and I coordinated the full visual content for two magazines every month: one main issue and one special issue. We adhered to the brand guidelines, with a traditional southern style, but worked to include a new language to appeal to a younger audience.
I was also responsible for producing monthly web content, including pop-ups, banners, and social media assets.

	Expecting Something (2020)in collaboration with Nelleke Broeze and Jenny Konrad,&#38;nbsp;with guidance from Ruben Pater.


As women in a man’s world, and students without much stability, we were able to immediately empathize that an unplanned pregnancy could easily dismantle any of our lives. As part of a larger group project investigating homelessness in the Netherlands, we wondered: How does homelessness uniquely affect women who become pregnant? During our research, we discovered an absence of data on this particularly vulnerable demographic. 
We conducted an ‘undercover’ email investigation of student housing organizations to determine if they would illegally evict pregnant students. We also recorded an interview with a woman who became homeless due to pregnancy, highlighting the gaps in the system. The interview overlays the email correspondance to reveal how policy directly effects the individual.&#38;nbsp;All names were removed for privacy.&#38;nbsp;Women’s resources are provided.
